TEXAS CONTEMPORARY

Texas Contemporary is an international art fair that was held September 4 - 7 2014 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. It features art galleries and nonprofit organizations. This year the fair included BOOK MACHINE (Houston) a public book collaboration and BAD, student designed products from the University of Houston presented by Blaffer Art Museum

Here is a peek at the fair and installation by Matt Johns of Matter Creative.

DAVID ADICKES SCULPTURWORX

David Adicke is responsible for sculptures and signs throughout Houston. Most of them quite fun and memorable. If you make your way out towards the Heights you can stumble into a magic land. Giant heads occasionally litter the industrial, Houston neighborhood where sculptor David Adickes has his studio. You can freely wander the yard and even crawl into a bust or two.

SICARDI GALLERY

MARTA CHILINDRON & GARCIELA HASPER

Sicardi Gallery is currently showing Dialogues, an exhibition of new sculptures and paintings by Marta Chilindron and Graciela Hasper. This exhibition explores geometry, transparency and it’s full of color!

I took my first walk through of the gallery space and it’s beautiful. The exhibition is also wonderful with great combinations of color and space. I highly suggest going to check it out and then pop over to the Menil or the Houston Center of Photographer for an afternoon full of art.

THE MENIL COLLECTION

The Menil Collection houses the private art collection of founders John de Menil and Dominique de Meniof roughly 17,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs and rare books.

Currently, they have Charles James on exhibition. He is considered by many to be America’s first couturier. They are also currently exhibiting the works of Charles James at the Met in NYC. I consider myself lucky to have seen some of the beautiful pieces on show. It certainly makes me wish I had worn some of those pieces back in the 50s!

I’m also obsessed with the green lawn and lawn art. These drains are so awesome and make for such a striking photo. Take a gorgeous day, pack a picnic and go hang out on the green!

BIGGEST MURAL IN HOUSTON

This incredible piece is another contribution to the Houston landscape by French artist Sebastien “Mr. D” Boileau (the artist of the Biscuit Paintwall). It’s located at 2800 San Jacinto St. You should check it out!

Here is more information pulled from their website

The concept of this mural is to appropriate imagery from one of the most admired renaissance paintings in the world, and to place it within a contemporary environment that references the current urban culture of street art and the long tradition of mural painting. At 8,000 square feet, “Preservons la Creation” (Let’s Preserve the Creation) is the largest mural produced in the history of the metro area of Houston.

BISCUIT PAINTWALL

I don’t know why, but I just love this. I definitely think a photoshoot is in order for the future. Painted by French, Houston-based artist Sebastien “Mr. D” Boileau of Eyeful Design, the Biscuit Paint Wall debuted in Montrose in May 2014 when Biscuit Home relocated to Houston’s most creative zip from Upper Kirby. It’s part design, part organic.  If you head out that way and take photos, make sure you tag it “#BISCUITPAINTWALL”!

SAINT CLOUD: LEM LEM INSTALLATION BY MATTER

I was invited to do the photography for a new creative studio called Matter, founded by my friend Matt Johns. The concept is super cool, check it out!

Francesca DiMattio via iPhoneography

I’m loving the Francesca DiMattio: Housewares exhibition at Blaffer Art Museum. It’s amazing how much detail is part of each piece. I went to listen to a gallery talk today and just had to take photos. It’s always a bummer when you don’t have your good camera with you, but the iPhone is great in a pinch. I wanted to share the photos with you anyway!

From the Blaffer website: Through material and formal collision her sculptures investigate and challenge ideas of the decorative and its association with femininity. Says DiMattio, “It changes what we think of as feminine and presents the domestic in forms that call for new adjectives.”

The exhibition is open through August. Check it out! www.blafferartmuseum.org

SKYSPACE PART I: Twilight Epiphany

I went to explore Skypace: Twilight Epiphany designed by artist James Turrell today at Rice University. It’s an awesome structure. Simplistic and beautiful.

Check out the description from the official website, “James Turrell’s composition of light compliments the natural light present at twilight, and transforms the skyspace into a locale for experiencing beauty and reflective interactions with the surrounding campus and the natural world.”

If you’re in the area, you should definitely visit. More information can be found here

I love my cat. Like seriously, love her! I haven’t picked up my good camera in some time due to being mostly graphics focused at the moment and my huge move. Well, today I’m getting ready to do some family photos and decided to test. This was literally the first photo I took. I think she makes a good test model, no?
